Acne

Acne, Pimples, Zits the What, Why, and How

Acne is a common skin condition. Its technical name is Acne Vulgaris. Acne is small pustules or bumps that effect or grow out of the sebaceous follicles. Sebaceous follicles are hair follicles that produce sebum. Sebum is naturally produced oil that acts as a moisturizer to the skin. Acne is caused when pores get clogged with an excess production of sebum or with external oils or dirt that combine with the sebum. This most commonly occurs on the face, upper chest, and on the back. Acne is also known as pimples. These pimples are the result of a clogged follicle. Acne can be a minor issue for some people meaning that some experience only an occasional pimple while others experience too many pimples to count.

Acne can come in several forms: Blackheads, whiteheads, nodules, cysts, and pustules. Blackheads are only partially blocked pores that appear as black slightly raised pores. They can often collect in certain areas such as on or around the nose. These can take longer to clear up. Whiteheads are pimples that are completely blocked pores they appear as white. Pustules are sore, often painful and inflamed. They are most often red with a yellowish head. Nodules are actually under the skin, they are quite painful and can cause scaring. Cysts are puss filled pimples. If picked they often become more inflamed and the infection appears to go deeper.

Acne is most common is pre-teens and teenagers. Many teenagers experience acne. Hormone levels can cause an increase in sebum which can clog pores and cause outbreaks. Teenagers can experience outbreaks of acne that appear on their face, back, arms, and their chest. These outbreaks are most usually connected to an increase in hormone levels caused by puberty however; foods can also seem to be an irritant and connected to adolescent break outs as well. Teens usually experience a clearing of their skin as they approach their twenties but it is not uncommon for these breakouts to remain through the twenties.

Women can also experience breakouts of acne during their menstrual cycle. Hormones increases are also the main reason for these outbreaks. As women's get older these outbreaks often take place less and less frequently.

Acne can be minor with just one or two bumps. However, sever acne can leave the skin red, inflamed, swollen and unsightly. Pimples, zits, and blemishes are all common names for acne. Acne must be treated right away. If small outbreaks are not handled immediately than inflammation could take place and the acne could become painful or spread out and look unsightly.
